A note from the festival founder.
This project is decades in the making and also an accident. I was personally harassed under the Santa Cruz anti-homeless laws in the early 1980's when I was living in my van while a working starving UC Santa Cruz College student. One response was that I decided to become a free lance photo journalist to document what horrors were going on in the luminous jewel that is Santa Cruz. Some of those photos were published in newspapers, including the Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury, and the Watsonville Register. Now, years later, the same laws are used to harass the next (and same) generation of homeless people. With even a greater sprinkling of irony, the son of the counsel member behind the laws of the 1980's is now on the counsel pushing a new generation of similar laws. (It must be noted that this council member also is the owner of a big local book store. Although I do not support this counsel member's actions, I still am compelled to state that I support independent book sellers. Please chose the local independent book store, including his, over the chain store, but everyone should consider considering how and where they spend every dollar). The Festival started as dusting off the old photos and sniffing the irony. Then, it became an art show. Then, there was no place to hold the show, so we found San Lorenzo Park was available. Then, it became a Festival, with good ideas that keep coming in. We ask for your participation and attendance.
Think globally and act locally is not new, but still so cogent. Please join us Saturday, September 12, 2009 in San Lorenzo Park. We seek a deeper dialogue, with respect and understanding for all, in a safe and fun environment.
Thanx, Herm
